Breadfruit is an attractive fast growing single-trunked tree with spreading, evergreen canopy, typically 40–50 ft tall. Breadfruit is found throughout the tropics distributed throughout the Caribbean to Central and South America, Africa, India, Southeast Asia. Appearance – Smoothly to slightly bumpy or spiny Fruit shape – Round, oval, or oblong Colour – light green, yellowish-green, or yellow when mature Flesh colour – creamy white or pale yellow Flesh taste – Sweet, creamy Uses – Vegetable, Fries, Chips, Flour etc., Health benefits – To treat skin ailments, diarrhea, stomach aches and dysentery Others – Timber, Fuel wood, Craft wood/tools, Fiber/weaving/clothing
Trees can reach heights of 60ft to 70 ft or more at maturity, more commonly around 40ft–50 ft. The trunk may be large as 6ft in diameter, occasionally growing to a height of 13ft or more before branching. A white milky latex is present in all parts of the tree.
The fruit is large, has a round to oblong shape and yellowish-green skin.
Plants start to bear 2 – 3 years after planting and can continue for more than twenty years. Fruits can be harvested from February to September.
